Adelaide is gearing up to host An Evening with Herbie Hancock and his band towards the start of next month.

The pioneering jazz pianist will arrive in Australia two weeks after his 71st birthday. He is celebrating 50 years as a professional musician in 2011.

He rose to prominence in 1963 with the release of debut record Takin' Off. Later that year, he was invited to join the Miles Davis Quintet.

Last year, the influential performer released album and film The Imagine Project, which saw him team up with big names such as Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews and Jeff Beck. The LP picked up two Grammy Awards - for best pop collaboration with vocals and best improvised jazz solo.

His Adelaide set is expected to include new material and classic tracks, including Speak Like a Child, Chameleon, Rockit, Round Midnight and Cantaloupe Island.

Hancock will be backed by his ensemble, which includes bassist James Genus, Greg Phillinganes on vocals and keyboard, Trevor Lawrence Jr on drums and singer Kristina Train.

The concert is set to take place on May 4th at Her Majesty's Theatre. Tickets range in price from AU$79.90 to AU$119.

Jazz enthusiasts looking for Adelaide hotels can find a generous selection of last minute hotel deals at LateRooms.com.au.
