AsiaRooms.com - See The Last Emperor of Southern Tang in Hong Kong in June

Released on: May 23, 2011, 6:24 am
Author: AsiaRooms Ltd
Industry: Travel

A new version of The Last Emperor of Southern Tang is set to be performed in Hong Kong next month.

The opera will be staged at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and will include English subtitles for attendees keen to follow the story better.

It tells the story of Li Yu, who was a brilliant poet but endured a challenging life.

In a statement, producer and director Frederic Mao said: "To many devout fans of Cantonese opera, The Last Emperor of Southern Tang holds a special meaning for them.

"This has a lot to do with the sentimental value attached to the 1968 film, The Tragedy of the Poet King."

He went on to describe how much he enjoyed marrying the traditions of Chinese theatre with more modern techniques, particularly since the story is rarely performed by Cantonese operatic troupes.

It is part of the wider Chinese Opera Festival, which showcases several different styles in the country's canon.

The performance is about 160 minutes long, including a short intermission. Tickets start from HK$100 (£7.90).

It will be staged at 19:30 local time from June 3rd to 5th, with a matinee performance at 14:30 on the final day.

AsiaRooms.com offers a comprehensive selection of Hong Kong hotels that may appeal to opera enthusiasts, such as the Kings De Nathan.
