Queen Elizabeth II's official birthday will be celebrated in
London with the traditional Trooping the Colour ceremony next month.
The military event will see thousands of people gather at Horse Guards Parade to
view the action, which includes a visit by the monarch.
Even though Trooping the Colour is held to mark Her Majesty's birthday, she was
born in April, not June.
The reason for holding the celebrations in the summer relates to a royal tradition
of having two birthdays if the sovereign is born in a month that may not enjoy good
weather for outdoor events.
During the occasion, Her Majesty inspects troops from the Household Division and
then leads them down the Mall to Buckingham Palace.
In a statement, the organisers of the event said: "The origin of the ceremony goes
back to the early 18th century and possibly even earlier, when the guards and
sentries for the royal palaces and other important buildings in the capital were
mounted daily on the parade ground."
Trooping the Colour will take place on June 11th this year.
