Sculptures, painting, photography and more will be the order of the day at the 2011 Wundowie Iron Festival, which takes place near Perth next month.

The event is held every year to celebrate the town's industrial heritage. It was chosen as the birthplace of iron ore manufacturing in Western Australia back in 1948, although the mill was closed in the early 1980s after 33 years of operation.

Wundowie Iron Festival's main draw is the Iron Beast Competition, in which individuals and teams are tasked with building a vehicle made predominantly from iron and steel, powered by the downward force of a 20 kg weight.

Some AU$1,000 in prize money will be awarded to the contraption that travels the longest distance.

And AU$1,500 is up for grabs in the Iron Sculpture competition, with previous efforts including everything from a life-sized model of Elvis Presley to a dragonfly.

Entries must contain at least 60 per cent iron, with judges using magnets to identify the metal content.

The festival is set to take place on May 15th at the Wundowie Sport Oval, kicking off at 10:00 local time and running until 17:00.

History buffs looking for last minute hotels near Wundowie can visit LateRooms.com.au and choose from a large selection of Perth hotels.

More information can be found at www.wundowieironfestival.com.au.
