The world's premier clay court tennis tournament will get underway in Paris on Tuesday May 17th.

Held at the French capital's famous Roland Garros complex, the French Open is a tournament that needs no introduction.

As one of the sport's four annual Grand Slam events, it routinely attracts the world's finest players and boasts a huge worldwide television audience.

World number one Rafael Nadal is the reigning men's champion, having claimed his fifth French Open title with a victory over Sweden's Robin Soderling in the 2010 final.

Nadal and Roger Federer have dominated the event in recent years, with the Swiss star lifting the trophy in 2009 and finishing as runner-up to his arch rival on the three previous occasions.

The only other player to have won the tournament in the last seven years is Argentina's Gaston Gaudio, who triumphed in 2004.

In the women's competition, Italian player Francesca Schiavone beat Australian Sam Stosur to claim her first Grand Slam title at the French Open last year.

Tickets for this year's event can be purchased online, with a number of different packages available.

The semi-finals and finals pack, which allows spectators to enjoy the climax of the tournament, is priced at €199 (£177).

Tennis fans will find a wide variety of Paris hotels at LateRooms.com, including the Hotel Bastille Paris.
