Art lovers have until the middle of next month to catch
Vermeer in Munich at the Alte Pinakothek.
The exhibition, which opened in March and will run until Sunday June 19th, features
paintings by Johannes Vermeer that formerly belonged to the private collection of
Max I Joseph, the first King of Bavaria.
It includes the Dutch artist's famous 1664 masterpiece Woman Holding a Balance,
which is currently on loan at the Munich venue from the National Gallery of Art in
Washington DC.
As well as works by Vermeer, the exhibition is comprised of exceptional paintings by
other notable figures of the Dutch Golden Age, including Jacob van Ruisdael, Willem
van de Velde the Younger and Philips Wouwerman.
Max I Joseph focused almost exclusively on Dutch masters and local Munich painters
when amassing his extensive collection, which was sold at auction in 1826.
The pieces are now scattered across the globe, but Vermeer in Munich has brought
some of the finest paintings back to the city for a limited period.
Admission to the Alte Pinakothek, one of the world's oldest art galleries, is
priced at €7 (£6.20) from Tuesday to Saturday and just €1 on Sundays.
Closed on Mondays, the venue is open between 10:00 and 18:00 local time every other
day, expect on Tuesdays when it does not shut until 20:00.
The gallery is located in the Kunstareal, Munich's famous museum quarter.
Culture vultures planning a trip to Bavaria will find a wide range of Munich hotels at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Hotel Leonardo Munich.
