Described as the 'Alpha and Omega' of the Victorian art scene, Sir Charles Eastlake was director of London's prestigious National Gallery for ten years from 1855 to 1865, the first person to hold the post.

Such was the efficiency and effectiveness of the way his gallery was run and expanded, many of his methods concerning the acquisition of work are still used today.

He embarked on yearly continental tours, during which he procured some 139 pieces, including some of the museum's most impressive Italian paintings.

This exhibition, running from July 27th - October 30th, honours his contribution. Featuring material from the museum archive alongside some of the pieces Eastlake himself was responsible for bringing to the gallery, it is a fitting tribute to a man at the very forefront of the history of this much-loved London attraction on Trafalgar Square.
