Berlin's Classic Open Air festival will celebrate its 20th
anniversary when it returns to the German capital's Gendarmenmarkt
square in mid-July.
Since it first took place in 1992, the event has attracted around 600,000 people to
105 shows across a diverse range of genres, including everything from soul, swing
and pop to operettas and stage musicals.
To mark the milestone occasion, the organisers have planned seven concerts that are
designed to be as appealing to young rock'n'rollers as more mature opera
enthusiasts.
Comedian and entertainer Herbert Feuerstein has been lined up to present the opening
night, which has been billed as the Best of Classic Open Air.
Described as a "glittering musical retrospective", it will comprise 20 pieces that
have been performed at previous editions of the festival, as well as a grand
fireworks finale.
Proceedings will commence at 19:30 local time on Thursday July 7th and tickets cost
from €54.33 to €104.93 (£48.10 to £92.90).
Among the other highlights of Classic Open Air is German TV personality and singer
Dominique Horwitz's presentation of well-known songs from the James Bond movie
franchise, performed by London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Set to take place on the festival's final night, Tuesday July 12th, the production
will be conducted by Carl Davis, with vocals from Mary Carewe.
The show is due to get underway at 19:30 and ticket prices are the same as for the
opening night concert.
Festival-goers with more classical tastes may prefer to watch Carmina Burana and
Credo, with music from the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt.
As well as live music, this concert will feature a light and laser show to make it a
truly audiovisual experience.
Ticket prices range from €47.43 to €93.43, with the show scheduled to start at 19:30
on Saturday July 9th.
