Movie buffs will be able to enjoy a variety of cutting-edge Asian films at the Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF) next month.

The cultural event will take place between September 15th and 25th this year at the Shaw Theatres Lido on Orchard Road and will be the 24th edition of the prestigious festival.

Since being founded by Geoffrey Malone in 1987, SIFF has become the largest and longest-running major film festival in the nation, with a focus on showcasing groundbreaking regional cinema and local talent.

Last year, the powerful China-set drama Mao's Last Dancer - from Australian director Bruce Beresford - opened the festival, while Japanese filmmaker Miwa Nishikawa's Dear Doctor was the closing movie.

The line-up for this year's SIFF programme is yet to be confirmed, but between 200 and 300 features and short films are expected to be chosen for screening, covering a variety of genres.

There will also be an awards component to the event, the Silver Screen Awards, which will comprise of an Asian Feature Film Competition and Singapore Short Film Competition.

An audience of Singaporean and international film lovers are expected to attend, providing an ideal platform for aspiring local directors.
