LateRooms.com - Dancers Prepare for Berlin's Tanz in August

Released on: August 04, 2011, 10:44 am
Author: LateRooms Ltd
Industry: Travel

Tanz im August will bring dance companies from 13 countries to the German capital.

The international dance festival is an annual highlight of Berlin's cultural calendar, with leading choreographers and many of the biggest names in contemporary dance heading to the city.

Now in its 23rd year, the event is due to run from Friday August 12th to Sunday August 28th.

Tanz im August has a reputation for presenting innovative and sometimes deliberately controversial shows, as well as staging performances in unusual venues.

With the likes of Lucinda Childs, Edouard Lock, Hiroaki Umeda and Guilherme Botelho among the confirmed performers, the programme for the 2011 festival looks typically exciting.

Brazilian choreographer Botelho is set to unveil a new show entitled Sideways Rain with his Geneva-based company Alias.

According to the organisers, the piece features 16 dancers and aims to provide "a visual and physical metaphor of the brute force that animates all life".

Elsewhere, Japanese dancer and choreographer Umeda will present his latest attempt to fuse classical ballet with contemporary forms of dance, such as hip-hop.

Tickets for performances at Tanz im August are individually priced. Seats at the Alias event range from €7 to €36 (£6.10 and £31.50), while a ticket for Umeda's show will cost between €15 and €20.

A total of 22 productions will be staged during the 17-day festival, along with an extensive supporting programme of talks, workshops, lectures and film screenings.

LateRooms.com offers a wide range of Berlin hotels that could appeal to dance fans, including the Maritim Hotel Berlin.
