LateRooms.com - Head to Bilbao for Verdi opera Simon Boccanegra

The Bilbao Opera Season kicks off next month with a new version of Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra.

Opening at the Palacio Euskalduna on Saturday September 24th, the production will also be staged on Tuesday September 27th, Friday September 30th and Monday October 3rd.

All shows begin at 20:00 local time, with tickets for the opening night priced between €75 and €181 (£65.70 and £158.60).

Simon Boccanegra will be performed by the Euskadiko Symphonic Orchestra and the Bilbao Opera Choir.

The three-act opera, which was first staged in Venice in 1857, features a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave.

Although perhaps not as famous as Verdi operas such as La Traviata and Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra is an established favourite among admirers of the great Italian composer.

It tells the story of the eponymous character's rise and fall as the Doge of Genoa in 14th century Italy.

The Bilbao Opera Season is due to run until the end of May 2012, with other productions including Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner and Verdi's early work Nabucco.

Opera fans considering a hotel in Bilbao will find plenty of options for accommodation at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Hotel Carlton Bilbao.
