Experienced athletes will be putting themselves to the test in Malaysia this October via the annual Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon.

Described by the organisers as the toughest mountain race in the world, the event will be held on October 22nd and 23rd and will challenge participants to race up and down the peak - a total distance of 21 km - in as short a time as possible.

This is no mean feat, as the mountain - which is located in the tropical Kinabalu Park - is 4,095m high and ranks as the second tallest peak in south-east Asia.

The Climbathon has been taking place each year since 1987 and was originally open to Malaysians only, but now welcomes competitors from all over the world, with top international athletes set to take part.

Last year, the fastest time was recorded by Italy's Marco de Gasperi, who made it up and down Kinabalu in just over two-and-a-half hours.

The winner of this year's event will be able to claim the prestigious Skyrunner SuperCup, a new title created by the International Skyrunning Federation.

Climbing enthusiasts can choose from a large selection of Malaysia hotels at AsiaRooms.com, such as the Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu.

Further details about the challenge can be found at climbathon.sabahtourism.com/2011/.
