An impressive visual spectacle can be enjoyed by visitors to Thailand next month when the yearly Illuminated Boat Procession is held.

Taking place along the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom between October 4th and October 12th 2011, the event will see a procession of "fire boats" floated down the waterway covered in flowers, incense sticks, candles and lanterns.

This event is celebrated in the north-eastern part of the country each year between the 15th day of the waxing moon and the first day of the waning moon in the 11th lunar month of the Buddhist calendar.

It marks the end of the Buddhist equivalent of Lent, or Ok Pansa, and will see locals placing a number of ritual offerings on the fire boats as they are set adrift.

Tourists can enjoy the memorable sight of the brightly glowing boats travelling along the dark river, while various colourful street processions and cultural performances will also be taking place.

It is one of many events being held in the Nakhon Phanom region to mark Ok Pansa, with the Royal Trophy Longboat Races also scheduled for the same week.

A large range of Thailand hotels is available to cultural tourists at AsiaRooms.com, including the Inthira Thakhek.

More information about this festival can be found at www.tatnews.org.
