Travellers to Madrid next month can book tickets to see Spain's first production of The Lion King at the Teatro Lope de Vega.

The immensely popular stage adaptation of the classic 1994 Disney animated film will premiere in the Spanish capital on October 21st 2011, following a 14-year Broadway run that earned the show 70 theatre awards.

Drawing inspiration from Hamlet, the show follows the adventures of the young lion cub Simba, who is driven away from his home when his father, King Mufasa, is murdered by his evil uncle Scar.

As they watch Simba mature and reclaim his place on the throne, audiences can enjoy timeless music by Hans Zimmer, Elton John and Tim Rice, including Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Hakuna Matata.

The show is also known for its lavish production by the acclaimed Julie Taymor, who helped to design striking animal costumes and backdrops to evoke the story's African setting.

Tickets for The Lion King are available from just under €20 (£17.40), with performances taking place at 20:30 local time from Tuesday to Thursday, 18:00 and 22:00 on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday shows begin at 19:00.
