Bangkok's annual Trooping of the Colours ceremony will return in early December ahead of the Thai king's birthday.

The event, based on a British tradition of the same name, sees personnel from the Royal Thai Army, the Royal Thai Navy and the Royal Thai Air Force don colourful uniforms for a procession through Bangkok's Royal Plaza.

Thailand's royal family watch on as the servicemen walk past in a parade and declare their allegiance to protecting the country's monarch and members of his court.

Very popular with locals, the event typically sees thousands of people descend on the Royal Plaza, with tourists advised to arrive as early as possible in order to secure a good vantage point.

This year's Trooping of the Colours is due to take place in the Thai capital on Friday December 2nd, three days before the king's birthday.

The tradition dates back to the 17th century, when colours were used to distinguish each regiment during the heat of battle.

After George III was crowned in 1760, it was declared that parades should be held every year to celebrate the monarch's birthday.

AsiaRooms.com recommends a vast selection of Bangkok hotels for cultural tourists eager to witness the procession, including the Twin Towers Hotel.
