LateRooms.com - Athletes Prepare for New York City Marathon

The 2011 ING New York City Marathon will take place on Sunday November 6th, with athletes from around the world set to gather in the Big Apple.

As one of the world's most prestigious road races, the annual event attracts more than 100,000 applicants and a worldwide television audience of approximately 315 million people.

The registration deadline for the marathon passed several months ago, but people can still gain entry by running for a participating charity.

Alternatively, they can become one of the estimated two million spectators who turn out every year to cheer on the athletes and enjoy the spectacle.

The event boasts a course that starts in Staten Island and makes its way through each of the city's famous five boroughs before finishing at the Tavern on the Green in Central Park.

It has been described by New York Road Runners, the race organisers, as "a 26.2-mile block party through the world's most diverse city" and "a model for big-city marathons around the world".

Although defending women's champion Edna Kiplagat has been forced to withdraw from the event with a knee injury, this year's London Marathon winner Mary Keitany will be among the stars bidding for glory in New York.

People seeking cheap hotels in the city will find plenty of options at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Candlewood Suites New York for those who want a place close to the major attractions.
