Visitors to Chiang Mai in Thailand this December can celebrate Christmas by taking part in the Chiang Mai Marathon.

The annual race around Chiang Mai City will be taking place on Christmas Day this year, allowing participants to tour the city on foot in a 42 km marathon that begins and ends at the Three Kings Monument.

Travelling by the underground ancient city of Wiang Koom Kam and through the Royalflora Expo, racers will be able to compete for cash prizes of up to 5,000 baht (£102.60), as well as T-shirts and medals for all who finish.

Half marathon and mini marathon events, as well as a fun run for kids, will accompany the main event, with registration costing $35 (£22.10) for those wanting to run the full 42 km.

People wishing to raise money for a good cause can also elect to join the Run for Elephants team, which will allow them to help support the care of rescued elephants that have been abused and neglected in the past.

The main race starts at 04:00 local time, with the subsidiary races commencing at hour intervals thereafter.
