AsiaRooms.com - Visit Phuket for Thai King's Birthday

A major public holiday will be celebrated across Thailand at the start of December to mark the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

His Majesty ascended the throne in June 1946 and is popular with many Thai people thanks to his dedication to raising standards of welfare across the south-east Asian country.

The King's birthday on Monday December 5th will see buildings throughout the nation adorned with bunting, flags and pictures of the ruler, with most of the decorations to be coloured yellow.

Although the most high-profile festivities will be held in the Thai capital Bangkok, other locations such as Phuket will join in with their own revelry, which often includes firework displays.

Bhumibol Adulyadej, which translates as strength of the land and incomparable power, was born in the US and spent the bulk of his early years in Switzerland, where he was educated at the prestigious Ecole Nouvelle de la Suisse Romande in Lausanne.

On his coronation in 1950, he said: "We shall reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of the Siamese people."

Cultural tourists keen to visit Thailand for this historic occasion can browse a wide array of Phuket hotels at AsiaRooms.com, which recommends the Patong Merlin Hotel, located near the famous Patong beach.
