LateRooms.com - Dublin Gallery To Host China Through The Lens Of John Thomson

Released on: November 01, 2011, 6:17 pm
Author: LateRooms Ltd
Industry: Travel

A new exhibition devoted to images of China by pioneering Scottish photographer John Thomson is due to open in Dublin next month.

Thomson was one of the first photographers to visit the Far East, settling in Hong Kong and travelling extensively in China during the late 1860s and early 1870s.

He specialised in portraits of everyday life in the Asian country, as well as capturing memorable images of eastern landscapes, architecture and cultural artefacts.

The exhibition at Dublin's Chester Beatty Library, entitled China through the Lens of John Thomson, features more than 50 images taken from the Wellcome Library collection in London.

It will run from Thursday November 17th to Sunday February 26th, with a selection of traditional Chinese clothing and accessories from the library's own collection on display at the same time.

The Chester Beatty Library is situated in the gardens of Dublin Castle and admission is free.

It is open between 10:00 and 17:00 GMT Tuesday to Friday. Saturday opening hours are 11:00 to 17:00 and people can visit between 13:00 and 17:00 on Sundays.

LateRooms.com recommends a wide range of Dublin accommodation that could appeal to culture vultures, including the Maldron Hotel Smithfield in the city's historic legal district.
