London’s Award-Winning Fringe Theatre Stages The World Premiere Of Howl’s Moving Castle

Author: Kieran Kerrigan
Industry: Travel

The Southwark Playhouse ends a successful year with an ambitious new stage adaptation

Following the success of Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar-nominated 2004 animated film, Howl's Moving Castle makes its world premiere on the London stage this winter, from 28th November 2011 to 7th January 2012, through Mike Sizemore's adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones's 1986 fantasy novel.

Visitors wanting to see this exciting new stage adaptation, which includes live action, multimedia projections, music by the Guillemots's Fyfe Dangerfield and narration by Stephen Fry, can book into one of the London hotels close to the London Bridge-based Southwark Playhouse where the play is being staged.

This has been a fantastic year for the Southwark Playhouse which recently won this year's Peter Brook Empty Space award, given to the most deserving fringe theatre venue each year. The theatre also opened a second performance space, The Vault, in January 2011 and it's in this new atmospheric space, situated beneath the tracks near London Bridge Station, that the premiere of Howl's Moving Castle is being staged.

The play, directed and designed by Davy McGuire and Kristin McGuire (whose latest productions include The Icebook), tells the story of 18-year old Sophie who is on a quest to break a magic spell cast over her by the evil Witch of the Waste.

The prematurely aged Sophie starts working for Howl, a notorious wizard famed for eating the hearts of beautiful young women – or so the rumours say. In Howl's magical castle, a turreted structure that can move between various lands and dimensions, she embarks on a journey to break her own spell and the one binding Howl to his fire demon, Calcifer. It's only then that she discovers there's a lot more to the mysterious Howl than his reputation suggests.

For visitors travelling from outside London , the website LondonTown.com is the place to go to book one of the London hotels located nearby the Southwark Playhouse theatre. With Christmas outings and so many festive activities in London , this is a busy time of year and hotel places get booked up fast so it's best to reserve your room in advance.
