The Rome Marathon offers runners the chance to put their powers of endurance to the test in one of the world's most famous cities.

Taking place on Sunday March 18th this year, the event boasts a 26-mile route that winds its way past iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St Peter's Basilica.

More than 12,600 people took part in 2011, placing the Rome Marathon among the top 20 most popular races of this kind in the world.

Although the Italian capital is often referred to as the 'city of seven hills', the organisers have been careful to ensure the route for the marathon is as flat as possible.

Further improvements to the course are expected this year, meaning competitive athletes should have an opportunity to record their best possible time in Rome.

The final deadline for registration is Tuesday March 6th and forms can be submitted online. Entry to the marathon is priced at €80 (£66.70).
