An Irish Mural for Austria

The municipality of Vordernberg in the district of Leoben in Styria, Austria is soon to welcome The Bogside Artists of Derry, N.Ireland. The scenic village has been chosen to speerhead a movement towards peace in Europe by means of culture and art. The three muralists have been invited there by the initiators of the program, Desmond Doyle and Hannes Misseton to paint a mural for the village on the theme of Europe's decade of struggle towards peace.

The mural, on the scale of the famous murals painted by the artists in the Bogside area of their home town of Derry will be the focus of much media attention over the coming weeks. Said Tom Kelly, one of the artists and their spokesman; "we daren't give away too much but I can say that the mural we have designed has been inspired by a phrase often repeated to us as we were growing up in Derry during the conflict...."dead fish go downstream." What that means is that peace, like anything else in life, will not come by itself. It is something we must achieve individually and collectively by addressing and removing the obstacles within and without that make its attainment so unreachable for many. Now that the human race has found the means to destroy itself the urgency of peace is the most important issue facing any of us. We welcome this opportunity therefore to make this statement in paint and are deeply honoured by the invitation from the people of Vordernberg."
