July 23, 2012, 2:34 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- South Florida singer-songwriter Shauna Sweeney has written plenty of love songs, but nothing quite like her recent YouTube sensation, "My Nerdy Boyfriend". The adorably quirky 3-minute song and accompanying video give nods to video games, nerdy movies and superheroes and has racked up 40,000 hits in its first three days. It also received major kudos from geek-friendly sites like Kotaku.com which calls it "a truly sweet tune" and certifies, "the jokes and references are so spot on".
Sweeney, who has played over 1,500 shows across the eastern U.S. over the last 8 years, has achieved local success selling thousands of copies of her 2010 all-original EP "Catch the Light", singing the national anthem for the Miami Marlins three times (Shauna Sweeney sings the national anthem for Miami Marlins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VeVT_JWyZQ) and even went to Guantanamo Bay Cuba in 2011 to perform for the U.S. military and their families. But the overnight explosion of reactions to "My Nerdy Boyfriend", from adoring to scathing to downright weird, is her first experience with such widespread exposure; "I got a bunch of comments from people who said they found it really funny because it described their boyfriend or a girlfriend to a 'T'. There were comments by others who said they hated it because they thought I was making fun or being condescending, which was definitely not the case. Some comments incited debates back and forth, and others were too wacky to even comprehend. But I love all the feedback--all these conversations got started based on something I put out there, and I'm very proud of that."
